Voices of the African Landscapes Dialogue (EcoAgriculture Partners, Tanzania)

From November 12-15, 2019, landscape leaders from across Africa gathered at the African Landscapes Dialogue in Arusha, Tanzania. This event brought together grassroots champions to exchange knowledge and set the agenda for sustainable land restoration and rural development.

With 27 Sub-Saharan African countries pledging to restore over 96 million hectares of degraded land by 2030, and 40 countries including land use strategies in their climate commitments, the challenge is clear: how will African nations meet these ambitious goals while balancing population growth, food security, and economic development?

We participated in this important gathering and, amongst other tasks, interviewed participants to capture their insights and experiences. This video showcases their voices and perspectives, highlighting the need to empower local leaders—ensuring they have the tools, knowledge, and influence to drive sustainable and inclusive landscape management. This dialogue was a key step in strengthening grassroots capacity to shape Africa’s future from the ground up.

We were honored to be tasked with creating ILRI’s first-ever 360-degree video, leading the entire process—from scriptwriting and filming to collaborating with an external editor and voice-over actor. This groundbreaking video takes viewers into the daily lives of Ugandan pig farmers, traders, and consumers, offering an immersive perspective on the country’s growing smallholder pig sector.

As part of the International Livestock Research Institute’s (ILRI) efforts to explore new technologies for better communication, this video showcases the potential of 360-degree storytelling to bring ILRI’s work to life. Planification participative pour une gestion plus inclusive et durable de l´eau dans les zones rurales du Burkina Faso (IMWI, Burkina Faso)

For this video with the International Water Management Institute in Burkina Faso, we were tasked with writing the script, producing the video, conducting interviews, and editing to bring this story to life. This video explores the urgent global challenge of water quality degradation and the innovative efforts in Burkina Faso to address it.

With diverse and sometimes competing demands on water resources, managing water quality has become increasingly complex. In Burkina Faso, stakeholder participation is essential for effective watershed management. The PP4MIS project has developed strategies to strengthen the capacity of Local Water Committees (CLEs) at the community level.

This project investigates how socio-hydrological models can support decision-making for sustainable water resource management. Focusing on the Kou River and the Bapla Dam, this study sheds light on local approaches to tackling water pollution and ensuring a more inclusive and sustainable future for water governance.

We were tasked with writing the script, producing the video, conducting interviews, and editing to capture this story. Our journey took us to Western Kenya, where farmers are at the heart of on-farm evaluation trials.

As part of the Seeds for Resilience project, 540 farmers from 23 community groups have a critical role: selecting the best-performing varieties from 50 different sorghum accessions. Their choices will help shape future climate-resilient crops.

Watch the video to dive deeper into the story—discover how farmers vote for their favorite varieties and learn about their strategies to combat striga, a parasitic plant threatening sorghum production.

Seeds for Resilience is a five-year initiative supporting the national genebanks of Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, and Zambia, funded by the German government through KfW.

Participatory Video and Social Innovation in Colombia (InsightShare)

This participatory video was carried out in order to create new social innovation strategies in Colombia. In collaboration with CISNA, the d.school Paris and InsightShare, a 2-day workshop was carried out with the Youth Platform of the city of Pasto to, subsequently, share this knowledge within local communities of Narino, Colombia and beyond.

Then, teachers of “Los Pastos” indigenous groups took part in a 2-day Participatory video training that enabled them to bring key issues to the fore. Training participants learnt practical ways to create clearer messages to reach out to more members of the community, as well as digital skills for the future. One of the positive aspects of the Participatory Video methodology is that it has the power to motivate oral communities to join such projects. Since they are more willing to talk and share their thoughts and experiences through a camera, they are likely to gain more confidence and leave further barriers behind.

By experiencing mixed roles in the fieldwork, as facilitators and participants, members of the group highlight the importance of going beyond theory to actual practice and the value of group dynamics.
